01The company.
August 2026
A rooftop-tent brand from Lüneburg, with a range that now reaches the camp kitchen and the camp light.
Nordling® Outdoor makes rooftop tents, tarps, pavilions and camping furniture, sells them from its shop, its showroom in Lüneburg and the outdoor fairs, and roughly tripled its revenue in a year (the company’s case). Its new range is made in China and sold in Germany: the FJØRDLAND-OVEN, a camping wood-burner on the rocket principle, ready to cook on almost as soon as it is lit and open for pre-order on nordling.de, and the ÅMBER-LIGHT, an LED light chain and lamp in one.

The starting point
Two products from two factories, two neutral boxes, and a range that keeps growing: each product arrived with the factory’s own neutral box and its die-line, and two or three more are in work.
A box designed product by product would have to be designed again for every new size, every new language and every new factory. The brief was to decide once: not a box, a system.

02Five directions.
Packaging directions, August 2026
Four on the factory’s die-line, one structural concept for the range.
The light chain came in a hanging box with a euro hole, 117 × 50 × 117 mm. Four directions run on that form without new tooling, so the choice between them is purely visual; the fifth changes the structure.

Exhibit 3The five, read together
| Direction | Shelf presence | Character | Production | Die | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 Midnight | Quiet | Premium tech | Simple | Current | |
| 02 Signal | Loud | Reliable tool | Simplest | Current | |
| 03 The Diagonal | Strong | Athletic | Simple | Current | |
| 04 The Band | Structured | Retail system | Simple | Current | Production |
| 05 The Cutout | Theatrical | Gift, hero | Involved | New | The range concept |
03The Band, written down.
Direction 04, the system
Charcoal stage, orange spine, white line, measured in millimetres on the printed box.
Three quarters of the front carry identity and one quarter, an orange band, carries function; the band runs round the box like a belt at the same position on every face. The rules scale from the shorter side of each face, so a 117 mm carton and a 540 mm carton stay legible by the same law.
Exhibit 4One front, two jobs
Exhibit 5The scale, from the shorter side of each face
| Token | Rule | On a 250 mm face | On a 117 mm face |
|---|---|---|---|
| Margin | 6 % of the shorter side | 15 mm | 7 mm |
| Logo | 7.6 % of the shorter side | 19 mm | 9 mm |
| Body copy | 1.22 %, held between 2.55 and 3.2 mm | 3.05 mm (8.7 pt) | 2.55 mm (7.2 pt) |
| Legal micro | Never under 2.1 mm (6 pt) | 2.2 mm | 2.1 mm |
| Ring icon | 8.8 % of the shorter side | 22 mm | 10 mm |
German leads, because the market is DACH and legal and safety text must be German; a switch flips every pair to English-first for export. The second language is one step smaller and always white: size carries the hierarchy, never a tint.

04The Studio.
3D ~ faces ~ die line ~ sign-off
The rules live in a tool the team uses without the designer in the room.
The Nordling Packaging Studio is one self-contained page: it renders the box in 3D, face by face and as the flat die line with bleed and safe zones, prints the 1:1 artwork, and keeps the copy in both languages. Nordling’s team edits on a shared link and saves for sign-off; the firm pulls the saved version back, rebuilds, and sends print files to the factory.
A new product is a new size and new copy, not a new design.

05Two products, one family.
FJØRDLAND-OVEN ~ ÅMBER-LIGHT
Two sizes, two factories, one set of rules.

Exhibit 7Before and after
| The factory’s box | Nordling’s box | |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Neutral, the factory’s | Nordling’s, in one family across the range |
| A new product | Designed from nothing | A new size and new copy in the Studio |
| Languages | One | German lead, an English-first switch for export |
| Sign-off | Files by mail | A shared link, saved for sign-off |
| To print | The factory’s artwork | 1:1 artwork and die line from the Studio |
Two products from Chinese factories carry Nordling’s name on boxes built by one set of rules. The same Studio takes the next product in the range, and the Cutout waits as its structural next step. The company behind it: Nordling Outdoor.
